immigration/ indutrialization key terms

1) progressive era- people became active to make a better government

2) muckraker- a person who exposed government officials who did bad 

3)social gospel- a person who focused on excessive wealth, poverty, alcoholism, crime, racial tensions, and child labor.

4) social darwinism- you work hard to get what you need.

5)  americanization- a person from a different place than America and they become a U.S citizen.

6) Europe- a place that is made up of cities like bulgaria, hungary, poland, italy, and portugal

7) political machine- a powerful person that persuades the people to vote for them.

8) andrew carnegie- scottish-american industrialist who led the enormous expansion of the american steel industry.

9) horizontal/ vertical integration- people owning their own businesses.

10)  urban-  human features to their surroundings

11) Upton Sinclair- american author and one- time candidate for governor of of california who wrote close to 100 books including The Jungle.

12) meat inspection act- a law that prevent mislabeled meat to be sold as food and make sure the meat is slaughtered and clean in sanitary conditions.

13) trust/ monopoly- owners that try to reduce competition and prices.

14) graft- political corruption that should not be used for politicians personal authority gain.

15) hull houses- important reform institutions that were used in the late 19th and early 20th century.

16) jane addams- founder of the hull house in chicago and a leader in women suffrage and world peace.

17) Cesar Chavez- an american farm worker who was a labor leader, and civil rights activist who co- founded the national farm workers association.

18) immigration act of 1965- it replaced a a quota system and put in a preference system that focused on immigrants family relationships and what not.

19) immigration- people moving and settling in a country or region where they did not live before.

20)  alexander graham bell- a scientist, inventor, engineer, and innovator who is created with credited with inventing the first telephone.

21) george eastman- american inventor who founded a company that invented film for pictures.

22)  Thomas Edison- created the motion picture camera, and the light bulb

23) henry bessemer- an english inventor, engineer, and businessman, known for improving the process of steel.

24) reform- the improvement of what is wrong, corrupt, or not what you want.
