labor unions emerge page 67

1)Based upon what I have read, labor unions were good because they tried to make good working conditions pay the workers more and stop child labor.

2)The triangle shirtwaist company was a sweatshop in which 146 seamstresses died because they jumped out of the window of a nine story building to not be burned to death. These deaths could have been prevented if they had better working conditions.

3)Monopolists did not want unions because because they did not like how they were trying to pay the workers more and for less hours. Union members did not like scabs because they put themselves in danger for less money then the original pay.

Many factory and sweatshop owners disliked the vision of unions like the IWW because they gave dignity and solidarity to unskilled workers even the african americans.

http://goo.gl/63Y6L link to website were this picture is found

                                                                      http://goo.gl/9Cpj4 quotes from reading website

"laborers were inevitably bound to their company through debt."

"the poor were stuck in a rut."

"These unions fought for better working conditions, higher wages, and shorter work days."

o What are three pieces of information you chose?
A) i chose these three quotes becasue it showed how the workers were always doing the same thing and how the unionists wanted to change that.

o Were labor unions necessary? Why?
A) unions were necessary because they were helping the workers by trying to get them more pay less work and no child labor.

o Did the government help make monopolies? How?
A) yes because they were making laws weak and they didnt deal with the people.

o How did money in politics contribute to this cartoon? How has this changed?
A) money and politics made this cartoon because the poor people didnt get  a say in what they wanted and they tycoons always made the decision.

are the old bosses still in charge?

Q:  What is the setting of the cartoon?
A) The setting in this cartoon is the house of the senate. the senators are sitting down and it is bi-cameral with the house of representatives.
Q: what entrance is open and what entrance is closed?
A)  The monopolists door is open and the people's door is closed. i dont think it is right that the people's door is closed because they are the one's that voted for them
Q: who do you think the large men at the back of the room represent?
A) the men in the back of the room represent all the monopolists because they want to make the laws that effect them weak.
Q: why would the large men be in the room in the first place?
A) the large men wouold be in the room because they wanted to influence the senators mind about how strong they made the laws.

people feel like the congress doesnt support them because all they really care about is the people who make more money then everyone else. everyone else doesnt really matter because they dont make as much money and they wont get as much say as everyone else just because of money.

Because of Electricity

work in the dark room
electricity has come
we see everything

this hiaku shows the importance of electricity because with businesses they could be anywhere than next to rivers and they could have machines do the work instead of people and it could make more money and save money too. it helped people at the home because they didnt need to stop things so early and they could continue work so that it wouldnt have to be done the next day

major events befor the civil war

Around 1850, the united states was divided geographically- north and south- with the south highly dependent on farming and slavery and the north more industrialized than the south.

the country was so divided by slavery, california needed the compromise of 1850 to let new states decide slavery through popular sovergnity.

around this time the southern states were seriously considering seccesion.

many people from the north hated slavery so the people who hid the slaves( abolitionist) hid them in a series of underground railroads through canada so they could be free.

when Uncle Tom's Cabin was published people from the south thought it was an attack on them.

two politicians became famous for their slavery debates which were douglas and lincoln and they were both against slavery but lincoln thought that everyone should be free and douglas didnt like it but thought that if a state wanted it that state could have slaves.

on  december 20th, 1860 the south secceed and the first state was south carolina and all the other southern states followed.

1. Cite examples of "Supreme Law of the Land"

"that said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug"

2. Cite examples of "federal vs. state authority?
"[The feds] will do whatever they can to interfere with marijuana legalization in any state," Miron said on Tuesday, before the initiatives passed."

3. What was the "compromise" that helped to pass the referendum in Washington? How do you think this compromise would affect demand for the product?

the compromise was that they triple taxed marijuana.

4. Why was Oregon's referendum not passed?
it was the way it was written because of this:
"the fact that it would have handed most of the regulating power in the marijuana industry to the growers rather than independent overseers."

diary entry #7

dear diary,

i am on my death bed on december 3rd,1819 in an abandoned house in georgia and i have a problem where if i eat or drink anything my stomach cant hold it in i dont have much time and noone even cares but i lived a pretty good life because i fought for my rights and i got them. i mean i never thought in my 343 years that i would get my rights ha! i am so glad that i got to do what i have always dreamed of so my life was worth living for. i make a prediction that there would be way more states in 2019 and that there will be very different ways of living and they will wear weird clothing and drive things with wheels and its just going to be a corrupt and evil economy with people stealing, fighting, killing, and so much poverty so thats what i think and i will be so glad that i will not be apart of it. i have missed my parents and friends and everyone that i was with in hispanoila but you know what they probably missed me too but i will see them very very soon after i die. by the way i wrote a letter to who ever finds my remains in this house because nobody knows where i am so if they find me they will know who i am.
                                                       farewell forever your friend,

diary entry #6

dear diary,

i remember something else there were only 13 colonies which were massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new hampshire, new york, delaware, new jersey, pennsylvania, virginia, maryland, north carolina, south carolina, and georgia. the anti-federalists are awesome to me because they care more about our rights than the strong central government and they fought for the bill of rights on march 4th, 1789 and they gave it to them so i am very happy about that. im in massachusetts right now so i think and its pretty cool the people the food the atmosphere so i mean if all the other states were like this i think i will stay here for a while cuz i heard about the enlightenment and you know what this is actually inspiring and i think this john locke guy has a really good point about us standing up for ourselves so i think im going to join them and help them out.
                                                                  sincerely
